- Installation of a peripheral vein catheter (cannula)

Definition :

It is a device that is connected intravenously to give intravenous drugs and solutions.

The most vulnerable people :

 All patients treated with intravenous injections.

The Working Group :

The nursing team.

Tools :

Chinese with a lid-cannulas of different sizes-medical cotton-adhesive plasterboard strips-latex gaskets-alcohol 70%.

Steps: 

1.      Confirm the patient's personality and review the name fourthly.

2.      Explain the procedure to the patient to reduce his anxiety.

3.      Maintain patient privacy.

4.      Wash hands and wear guanti.

5.      Tie the forearm with a compression tie and preferably the less frequently used forearm.

6.      Disinfect the catheter installation site with 70% alcohol and leave to dry and should not be touched after disinfection

7.    Insertion of the cannula and monitors the appearance of a push of blood in its place known as the cannula (as a sign of penetration of the vein wall) and slowly complete the entry with pulling the metal entrance out of the vein to re-insert the same cannula again.

8.      Loosen the compression ligament on the forearm ( tourniquet ).

9.      Connect the solution device to the cannula to test the work of the cannula efficiently.

10.  Fixing the cannula with adhesive tape with a note of the installation date.

11.  Leave the place of installation dry and visible.

12.  Dispose of the cannula tooth immediately after use in the safety box for acute waste .

13.  Clean the used tools, return everything to its place and prepare it for the next use.

Cannula lifting is considered in the following cases :

◾ Immediately after the blood transfusion.

◾ After the completion of the need for it or only 3 days after the installation.

◾ When redness or inflammation appears at the site of the cannula.


Installation of a urinary catheter

Definition : -

It is a procedure performed for the patient in pathological conditions according to the doctor's instructions .

Causes : -

Bladder emptying-estimating the amount of fluid coming out-surgical operations

Liver disease-kidney disease-urinary tract disease-bed disease

Tools :

A urinary catheter of a suitable size for the patient – a urine collection bag– a 10 ml syringe – a salt solution – sterile Guante – gauze – Betadine for disinfection – KY gel-medical adhesive.

Steps: 

1.    To preserve the privacy of the patient, a paraffin is placed Oris installed in a spare booth.

2.    Tell the patient what you will do and explain the medical reasons for installing the catheter.

3.    Collects the necessary tools for the installation of a urinary catheter.

4.    Surgical hand washing.

5.    Wear a sterile glove.

6.    Connect the urine collection bag to the catheter first.

7.    Apply 3 mL of gel (or any anti-friction material).

8.    Handling the sterile catheter to the doctor for installation.

After installing the catheter :

1 . Fixation of the catheter in the thigh with a plastic.

2. Install the bag of all urine below the patient's bed level and place it on the urine carrier to prevent reflux of urine.

3.Bring a patient's own urinal to empty urine from the urine collection bag.

4.Dispose of the waste in its own red bag.

5.Routinely wash hands after taking off gloves and dry them thoroughly.

Note and record the amount of urine and any changes in the presence of (blood – pus ) with informing the doctor.
